|
Barnes: US Women's Amateur Champion, 1895
Sargent: Runner Up, US Women's Amateur Championship 1895 and 1897
"Thirteen women entered the 18-hole event. They played 9 holes, had lunch and then returned to the course and played the remaining 9 holes. Lucy Barnes (Mrs. Charles S.) Brown of Shinnecock Hills shot a walloping 69 and 63 ending with a 132, becoming America's 1st Women's National Champion. Nellie C. Sargent of Essex County Club was the runner up at 134. The hasty organization of the tournament provided no opportunity for a prepared trophy. Mr. R. D. Winthrop and Mr. W. H. Sands (both of Meadow Brook) donated a silver pitcher which served as the 1st place prize." |
